Computer diagnosis and selective repair in York
We assess unreliable or damaged computers and explain whether repair, upgrade or replacement is the sensible option.
This is not a general walk-in repair shop, and not every fault will be repaired. The assessment establishes the sensible route before any work is agreed.
Problem signs this can help with
- A computer that will not start or shuts down unexpectedly
- Repeated crashes, errors or freezing
- Unusual noise, heat or unreliable charging
- A damaged component or peripheral affecting normal use
- Uncertainty about whether a fault is software, storage or hardware
- Deciding whether repair is worthwhile
- Important data being at risk alongside the fault
What the assessment establishes
- The reported symptoms and likely cause
- Whether further testing is proportionate
- Whether data should be protected or recovered before other work
- Whether selective repair is within Uptime's scope
- Whether an upgrade would solve the practical problem
- Whether replacement or specialist referral is better value
- The cost of approved follow-on work
Possible outcomes
- Software or configuration work
- A practical component replacement
- An upgrade
- Data recovery before further action
- Replacement advice
- Specialist referral
- Return without further work where repair is not sensible
Starting price
- Assessment
- £50
The assessment charge is included in approved final work. It is generally payable if further work is declined or no practical route is available through Uptime York. Parts and specialist costs are separate, and no paid follow-on work begins without approval.
Limitations
There is no promise to repair every device or fault, and physical phone or tablet repair, opened-drive work and clean-room recovery are not offered. Microsoldering or board-level repair is not part of the advertised service, other than as a rare, explicitly accepted exception.
Accidental-damage, liquid-damage or manufacturer-warranty cases may need specialist or manufacturer service, and work on unsafe, heavily damaged or economically unviable equipment may be declined. Workshop visits are by appointment after the problem has been discussed.
FAQs
What does the £50 assessment include?
Hands-on diagnosis of the reported problem and a clear explanation of the likely cause and sensible options. It's included in the cost of any approved follow-on work.
Will you repair every computer you assess?
No. Some faults are worth repairing, others are better solved by an upgrade, data recovery, replacement or a specialist referral, and the assessment is there to establish which.
How do you decide whether repair is worthwhile?
By weighing the cost of the fix against the computer's condition, age and value, and by being honest when repair isn't the sensible route.
What happens if important data is at risk?
Protecting or recovering the data is treated as a priority before other work, and this is explained as part of the assessment.
Do you repair phones, tablets or damaged screens?
No. Physical phone and tablet repair is not offered.
Can I bring the computer to the workshop without an appointment?
No. Workshop visits are by appointment, after the problem has been discussed.
